A-Z of the Library - part 2

The Library is home to a lot more than just books. Here's part 2 of our series uncovering the wonders of the Library - see what you discover…

J is for... Jigsaw

The jigsaw table is always set up in the Assembly Room – drop in and help us complete the puzzle. The largest jigsaw in the world is over 40,000 pieces and took over 600 hours to complete. But don’t worry, the ones in the Library are usually only a thousand.

K is for... Knowledge

Dr Seuss once wrote “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” The Library contains many thousands of books, magazines and online resources covering a huge range of topics. From learning a language to starting a business, finding a new dinner recipe to maps of the world – it’s a treasure trove of information and imagination, and it’s all completely free!

L is for... Large Print

For people with visual impairments, we have a wide collection of large print books and can offer magnifiers for people wishing to read in the Library. The Children's Library stocks a collection of Braille and giant print picture books. We also deliver audiobooks on USB sticks to people with visual impairments. To find out more, email the Outreach Librarian Jackie Burgess on [email protected]

M is for... Mindful Colouring

Did you know we have colouring books at the Library? Being ‘mindful’ means to be present in the moment and colouring is a great way to focus your thoughts and take some time out from a busy day. You can find colouring pencils and our adult colouring books in the Assembly Room on the first floor. They’re available for anyone to use.

N is for... Nook

For those of us who loved building dens as children, we know the comfort of hiding away in a small space and reading a book. The Nook recreates that environment, with padded seating, a desk and USB charging ports. It’s a great place to study or read. You can find the Nook in the Clifton Room on the first floor.

O is for... Opening Times

The main Library building is open six days a week. We have Late Night Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays, meaning we’re open til 9pm. You can search for what you’re looking for on the website any time of day, and access online resources 24/7 using BorrowBox, ULibrary and Libby – find out more here.

P is for... People

The Library wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible staff. Whether you need help finding a book or want to learn to use the machines in the Fab Lab, our team are here to help. If you’re out in the community, you might also see our Outreach Team delivering books to people’s homes or topping up resources in a school library. They look great in fancy dress too!

Q is for... Quiz Nights

Who doesn’t love a quiz? Gather a team and join us for themed quiz nights from Star Wars to Game of Thrones. Hosted in the Hayward Room, there’s drinks and snacks to keep your quiz mind focussed, plus prizes to be won. When you join the Library as a member, you’ll get a monthly newsletter straight to your inbox keeping you up to date with all the latest events. Stay tuned for more themed quiz nights in 2022!

R is for... Reading Groups

The Library runs a monthly Reading Group for adults, book clubs for children and teens in the school holidays, and a monthly specialist reading group focused on books that explore LGBTQ themes. Find out more and join here. Starting a book club of your own? Why not use a room in the Library for your meetings. We also have sets of books available for loan to book clubs, just get in touch to find out more.
