Book Week 2025

Get ready for one of the highlights of the Library year!

Thanks to the support of Collas Crill, from Monday 20 October we'll be welcoming famous children's authors Peter Bently, Jenny Pearson, and Ele Fountain for a whistlestop tour of local schools.

Throughout the week they'll meet more than 5,000 children to celebrate books and inspire a love of reading and writing.

They'll also be running some special events at the Library, including:

A huge thank you to Collas Crill for helping to champion reading across the Bailiwick.

The authors have been carefully chosen to appeal to children of all ages in Key Stages 1-3.

  • Peter Bently will see children in Key Stage 1 (Reception - Year 2). He’s best known for his humorous rhyming picture books like The Shark in the Dark and The Great Dog Bottom Swap. His books have won several national awards, including the 2022 Children’s Book Award for Octopus Shocktopus.

  • Author and teacher Jenny Pearson will meet children in Key Stage 2 (Year 3 - Year 6). Her debut children’s novel, The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Costa Children’s Book of the Year.

  • Ele Fountain will visit children in Key Stage 3 (Year 7 - Year 9). Her debut novel Boy 87, written while she was living in Ethiopia, is the story of a young refugee fleeing a dictatorship. It was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize for Older Readers, and nominated for the Carnegie Medal.

Why is Book Week so important?

Book Week is always great fun, and a wonderful opportunity for children to meet famous authors. It’s a key part of the Library’s mission to promote literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure.

Author visits are known to have a lasting impact on children, and to inspire a love of reading and writing. The authors are always fun and engaging, and their sessions create fond memories for the children. Above all, they promote the importance of reading for pleasure, which research shows is the single most important indicator for a child’s future success – more important than their family background.

Book Week is always one of the key events in the Library calendar, and we’re thrilled to have such fantastic authors coming this year. It’s sure to be a busy and inspiring week!
