The Guille-Allès Library Reading Group will be appearing on the Summer Read series of the Channel 4 TV Book Club on Sunday 1st August at 7.30pm on More4 (repeated on Channel 4 on Monday 2nd August at 12pm).

Filmed earlier in July The Reading Group will be discussing Ellis Island by Kate Kerrigan. Set in the early twentieth century and following the life of an Irish immigrant living in New York, Ellis Island provoked a lively and vigorous debate amongst the Reading Group members.

The Channel 4 TV Book Club series continues until 15th August. All the books discussed, including Ellis Island, are available to borrow from the Guille-Allès Library.

From July to December 2010 we will be carrying out an extensive programme of improvements to the main library entrance and staircase. WE WILL BE PROVIDING ALL OF OUR NORMAL SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES AND FULL ACCESS TO THE LIBRARY, INCLUDING THE LIFT, WILL BE MAINTAINED.
Our aim is to create a more spacious and welcoming feel to the entrance area and to improve access for all our users. This will be achieved by the removal of the current counter areas and the installation of automatic glass doors at both the main entrance and the entrance for disabled users. The changes will also give us an opportunity to reveal more of the Victorian tiled floor and to highlight the spacious proportions of the building. In addition, we will be installing three self-service machines – this will improve efficiency and will free staff to spend more time assisting library users.
It is intended that this work will be the first stage of a programme of refurbishment and redecoration which will eventually extend throughout the building.
There will inevitably be some inconvenience to users and we apologise for that.
Specific changes which we will be making for the duration of the works are as follows:

LARGE PRINT BOOKS will be re-located to the Reference Room on the first floor.

ISSUES & RETURNS & MEMBERSHIP ENROLMENTS etc. will be dealt with in the Reading Room on the first floor, with the exception of:

ISSUES & RETURNS OF MUSIC CDs, VIDEOS & DVDs which will be dealt with in the Hayward Room on the second floor.

JIGSAWS will be re-located to the half-landing between the first and second floors.

NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES will be placed in the current Reading Room but users should feel free to read them wherever they wish on the first floor, including the Assembly Room, where some of the low seating will be re-located.

Regular updates on the progress of the work will be posted on this blog and on the notice-boards near the temporary counter on the first floor.

Get ready for blast off with the Summer Reading Challenge

This year's Summer Reading Challenge is called Space Hop and the launch date is Saturday 24 July.
