Reading Well Books

Reading Well Books on Prescription Scheme

Reading Well Books on Prescription helps you to understand and manage your health and wellbeing using self-help reading. The scheme is endorsed by health professionals and supported by public libraries.

There are currently four book lists available: Reading Well Books on Prescription for common mental health conditionsReading Well Books on Prescription for dementia, Reading Well for young people's mental health and Reading Well for people with long term conditions.

All of the books on these lists can be borrowed for free at the Library.

Anyone who has looked into buying a self help book will know that there are hundreds of books available for each mental health difficulty. We have narrowed this down for people by finding the most effective books available for the most common mental health problems.

Cancer Support

The Reading Agency has also worked in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support to produce book lists recommended by people who have been diagnosed with cancer. The list includes books about cancer itself as well as people's experience of living with cancer.

Reading Well Mood-boosting Books

Reading Well Mood-boosting Books is a national scheme promoting uplifting novels, poetry and non-fiction. The books are all recommended by readers and reading groups.

We suggest that people using the Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme may also like to try some mood-boosting fiction or poetry, but the books are not prescribed, endorsed or recommended by health professionals.

Reading Well Mood-boosting Books is delivered by The Reading Agency, working with public libraries, NHS trusts and colleges throughout the UK.
